Thinking of bringing your dog on your summer holiday, but not sure how pet-friendly Cornwall is? As one of Cornwall’s most dog-friendly luxury hotels we thought we’d share our favourite places to head with your pooch in South East Cornwall and beyond.

Top dog-friendly Cornish beaches

We count ourselves lucky to have so many beautiful beaches that are dog-friendly year round. Talland Bay beach is just one of a number of the south coast’s welcoming coves where you can walk (or even swim) with your dog throughout the year. Other top beaches for salty sea dogs include Gorran Haven, Hannafore (West Looe), Porthcurnick and Lantic Bay. Or visit Watergate Bay, Perranporth, Crantock, Rock and Daymer Bay on the north coast, ideal for long walks along wide open beaches.

There are many more beaches where dogs are allowed but with certain restrictions, such as times of day. See Dog Friendly Cornwall,  The Beach Guide and Visit Cornwall for more information.

Eating out with your dog in Cornwall

Cornwall is very dog-friendly and there are countless establishments where dogs are welcome. After a walk stop for coffee, brunch or lunch at one of Cornwall’s excellent beach cafés such as the Talland Bay Beach Café.

Here at the Talland Bay Hotel you can dine with your pup outside on the terrace or inside in the Brasserie.  In nearby Looe why not try Daisy’s café, the Old Sail Loft, or head west to Havener’s at Fowey. The Carew Arms at Antony is not only one of South East Cornwall’s best gastro pubs but welcomes dogs to boot.

Further afield we love the Watering Hole at Perranporth, The Beach Hut at Watergate Bay or Blue Tomato at Rock. Most of the places listed in our dining outdoors blog post are dog-friendly so be sure to check them out.

Cornish gardens where dogs are welcome

One of the main concerns of visitors heading to Cornwall with their pets is whether they can visit local attractions with their dog. The good news is that there are plenty of gardens where dogs are permitted. These include the Eden Project, Lost Gardens of Heligan, Pinetum Gardens near St Austell and the magical coastal gardens at Trebah. Dogs are also welcome on leads at nearby National Trust estates including Lanhydrock and Mount Edgcumbe as well as Cotehele on the River Tamar.

Boat trips with dogs

Cornwall is famed for its coastline, and having your four-legged friend in tow needn’t mean being restricted to dry land.

A trip by ferry from Polruan to Fowey or Fowey to Mevagissey makes for a lovely day out. Why not hire your own boat to explore the Fowey River, immortalised in Kenneth Graham’s Wind in the Willows. Brett from Fowey River Hire says this is a particularly popular option with dogs, who “either do the Titanic moment up on the bow with the wind flapping in their ears, or curl up and snuggle in the bottom of the boat”.
